Meet our Language Teachers
Sra. Carmen Chiappetta, Spanish Grades K-3
Sra. Chiappetta has been teaching at St. Agnes since 2010 and has a total of 12 years of teaching experience. She received her B. A. from Villanova, and M.A. and Ph. D. from University of Miami. Sra. Chiappetta can usually be found reading, eating or gardening with her husband and four kids.
Sra. Sophia Dewechter, Spanish Grades 4-8
Sra. Dewechter received a B.S. Business Administration from California State University, Northridge. She is a Certified Instructor, Virginia Catholic Education Association, B.S. Foreign Language. She began teaching Spanish (grades K through 8) at St. Agnes in 2006. Previous to teaching at St. Agnes, Sra. Dewechter was an ESL teacher at All Saints School in Manassas, VA, a FLEX teacher at VA Run Elementary in Centreville, VA, Fairfax County Public Schools. She is a Hispanic native raised in Ecuador, South America, through high school and is fluent in Spanish and English. Sra. Dewechter feels blessed to be a part of the Saint Agnes school and community. She believes in educating the whole child while keeping in mind their individuality. She considers a privilege to be doing what she loves–teaching the Spanish language and culture to our future generations while practicing her Catholic faith.
Mr. Ian Handerhan, Latin Grades 6-8
Mr. Handerhan grew up in Arlington and is entering his 20th year at St. Agnes (10 as a student and 10 as a teacher). He continued his education at Gonzaga College High School and then graduated cum laude with a BS in Business Administration with Special Attainments in Commerce and a BA in Philosophy from Washington & Lee University. Mr. Handerhan teaches 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Latin classes and is a moderator for Student Council. When he is not at school, Mr. Handerhan is on deck coaching swimming for The Capitol Sea Devils where he serves as Head Coach and COO for the program.
